Pet Springer Spaniel attacked by offlead Akita

A pet Springer Spaniel almost had his throat ripped out in a vicious dog attack.

The family pet, Baxter, was grabbed around the throat by a Japanese Akita while on a walk at Shaw Heath Recreation Ground, Stockport.

Police are investigating the incident and trying to track down the owner of the Akita.

Baxter’s owner Kimberley Bond says her dog still has scars and tooth marks in his neck.

Police were called to the park on Kimberley Street, Shaw Heath, on August 3 at around 5.15pm after reports of a dog attack. Baxter had been grabbed by the throat by the dog, and the man walking the Akita, not believed to be the owner, was also bitten as he tried to restrain the animal.

...“The dog warden said they can’t even enforce that the dog has to be on a lead.

“When a dog defecates in the park and the owner doesn’t pick it up they can be fined up to £1,000 but if your dog gets viciously attack by another dog there is nothing we can do about it.

“It has cost us more than £1,000 and there is nothing we can do.

Poor Baxter, I hope he recovers well. I also hope that the owner of the Akita is found his dog was obviously not in control of the man who was with it.

Both dogs unrestrained?
Akita is bred for fighting. Why do we need them running loose in the park?
When I walk my dogs they are leashed.
It's a hundred times easier to get them out of harms way. And I always have a sturdy walking stick.
I'm glad Baxter is okay.
I hope the owner of the Akita is found and held accountable.
Even to pay the vet bill

Aw, man... Baxter looks a mess. Poor guy. The article title is really misleading as there are no wounds to the underside of the neck (the throat), therefore "throat ripped out" is an exaggeration to draw people in.

Rarely are horrific attacks reported as anything other than a breed with fighting history or bred for aggression towards something.... or someone. Say what you like, but "deed, not breed" is losing quite a bit of credibility IMO.

My Jade is NASTY and will maul dogs she feels threatened by and will also bite if cornered or spooked, but she is NEVER allowed off her leash, ALWAYS muzzled in public, and we stay AWAY from other dogs and people whenever possible. She has never bitten anybody or anything. KNOW your dogs nature and keep them out of stressful situations.

I always carry a fire poker with me on walks, and will not hesitate to beat a dog senseless, or even to death if it'll save my dog from a savage attack at the hands of a fighting monster. Jade is muzzled and cannot defend herself, and Nigredo won't fight back at all.

Keep the annoying fighting breeds and the breeds prone to DA on leashes, carry a breaking stick, and stop being such idiots.
