Man mauled by sister's dog when taking it for a walk

A man was taken to hospital with serious bites after he was attacked by his sister's Shar Pei while he took it out for its evening walk.

The 52-year-old man had been looking after the dog while his sister was on holiday and was taking it for a walk at about 9pm yesterday when it attacked, biting him on his arms and shins.

Members of the public ran to assist the man and managed to pull the dog away and restrain it before it was seized by police officers.
...[snip]...
A police spokesman said: “The man was looking after the dog for a relative, who was on holiday, and had taken it for a walk on Warbreck Road at about 8.30pm.

“During the walk the man dropped the lead and the dog ran off. He chased the dog on to Tatton Road to try and get it back, but was subsequently attacked by the dog and suffered serious dog bites to his shin and arms, which required hospital treatment.

“Officers will be speaking to the owner of the dog on her return from holiday.”

I wonder why he dropped the lead in the first place, and what happened to cause the dog to attack him when he tried to get it back.

Could be many things but I wonder if the heat had anything to do with it. Also we do not know if the animal has suffered abuse by him while looking after it dogs can't talk can they ?
Whatever it is it is sad for the man and for the dog but if it is found it is ill it may be a relief for it to be pts.

I don't like the way that this has been reported. No real investigation into what caused the incident, a dropped lead, and the man fell over? Far easier to demonise by bringing up that the supposedly cuddly Shar Pei has a track record for violence.
Also, no mention of what happened to the dog after the neighbour detained it - presumably it hasn't bitten her.
