Hundreds back call to shorten Southsea beach dogs ban

HUNDREDS of people have signed a petition calling for dogs to be allowed on Southsea beach for longer in the year.

Southsea Rock, a gift shop in Marmion Road, has gathered around 600 signatures as it looks for change.

Currently, animals aren’t allowed on that stretch of the seafront from March 1 until the end of September every year.

As reported, campaigners are calling for the authority to relax the ban so it doesn’t start until May instead.

March 1 does seem a bit early to me, but then I do not know how busy that beach is during March and April or what the regulations are on other beaches.

With so many dog friendly beaches in the UK (some allowing them all year round) I can't see why the uproar about this.

I've enjoyed taking my dogs on beaches for decades but don't want other peoples' dogs running round my kids when they are on the beaches. Pissing on their sandcastles and running through picnic mats and such.

Hundreds of protests is not a large number at all considering population size.

Some of those protesting are saying March is 'winter' - I think it should be sorted around holiday times. My kids went on beaches all year round. Not as if the sea is ever warm in the UK any time of year!

I have no problem with any council banning dogs from one or two beaches but they need to make the dog friendly beaches much easier to find. As a visitor to an area knowing where we can walk is often quite hard to find. Even resorted to following people with dogs when we went to new castle once as we thought they must be taking them somewhere to walk them, sadly they turned sharp left and went into a pub !

I agree - dog owners pay council tax too. We are lucky here we have a dog friendly beach that is open all year round for us (Ogmore, near Merthyr Mawr).
