Crufts hound group winner dies

The gorgeous Irish Wolfhound that won the Crufts Hound group earlier this year has died

A post-mortem examination showed that he had four litres of blood inside his abdomen, and poisoning was suspected when no bloat or spleen problems were found. But a second examination revealed a large bruise on his ribcage near his liver, and it is now believed the bleeding was caused by trauma.

He was with other dogs in their exercise area at Mr Janssens’ home in Turnhout at the time, and it is thought he suffered a trauma to his side while playing with the Wolfhounds. One of the large blood vessels had ruptured and he had slowly bled to death.

How awful. Just shows the damage a BIG dog can do - even when 'playing'?

Tragic, poor boy. Just goes to show how much damage can be done when big dogs play a little bit too hard. Happened to a friend of mine with her flatcoat and a lab he was playing with, and although the damage wasn't terminal like this poor boy, it did put him on crate rest of 3 months.

Tragic!! What a horrible way for him to die. I mirror what Tang and Helena have said about the strength of large dogs and the damage they can unwittingly cause.

Indeed Jenny this story well I can't help thinking of all the times I've seen it said about a big dog attacking a smaller one or a cat or whatever that 'if he'd really meant business he would have killed it instantly because is easily capable of it'.

In this case the other dog died anyway - as a result of an injury that wasn't an out and out grab it by the neck and shake it til dead (as is sometimes the case when the 'victim' is a small dog, cat or a baby).

And resulted from 'rough play' and not vicious intent? So much for all the stuff about socialisation and dogs learning how far they can and should go before stopping and learning that from their mums and litter mates. I'm assuming the dogs involved were 'trained' if they are from the show dog world.

Sad story. This is why I really don't like when dogs play too rough. It can lead to fights and even horrible accidental injuries like this
