Long Jump

Hi

How do teach a dog the long lump? I know most dogs will automaticly jump but Max just walks over them instead

Lodger used to just run over the top. I think what changed is he clocked I wanted it jumped - he knows the word jump - but if there's an easy way...

However - On the way to conversion there was a fair amount of practise with it shortened & with some one holding a jump pole to turn it into a jump -then gradually lengthening/ removing the jump pole etc.

There are probably other methods.

I've never actually had to teach it as mine have just done it automatically but I would start small and gradually work up to it. Get a good speed up so he would have to slow down to paddle over it and hopefully he will find it easier to jump it. Good luck.

My old dog Archie used to do this. The way we stopped it we turned them on their side so it was impossible...and then slowly put them back in the original position once he got the idea!

My dogs have all been naturally athletic and will leap ditches, fences, walls etc. I have never actually taught the long jump, but at my next working trials session we will hopefully be attempting some of the jumps - long jump, scale, clear jump - so will let you know

Try putting wings and a pole on small height with the long jump underneath, so they have to jump the jump, then remove the pole and see if they still jump, then eventually remove the wings and just leave the 4 corner marker poles.

I think he's started to get the hang of it!

We start just putting the first part down and he would jump that no problem then added more parts and he started to jump it rather than walking over it Also saying the word jump helped

I identify it by the word 'long' so that my dogs can tell which obstacle I want them to take next - if there's a choice it really helps!
