Rehabilitation & swimming

Our Springer Spaniel will soon be recovering from an operation on his front leg, we were thinking of letting him exercise in the swimmingpool, as soon his condition allows.
However we have been told that much swimming is unhealthy for a dogs spine.
Can anyone enlighten us more on this matter and suggest other rehabilitation exercises?our little friend

I hope for a speedy recovery
I would of thought that because swimming is a low impact exercise this would be really good, don't know about causing spine probs but it wouldn't be permanent anyway.
