Hi Brenda, pedal operated radios were used a lot in the Australian outback just after WWII and lots of people who had previously not had any communication to anywhere found them very useful. I used to repair them when I was in Oz.

Here's a picture of Mr. Treager who invented them and went on to run a company with lots of export orders:-

Ah yes but my radio has a handle if I want to charge it up by turning it round fast or I can plug into mains. Good for power cuts and no batteries to hand.

Just finished watching Vera. Ironing? What's that? I have had my iron 46 years and it still works. Only thing I have ever changed on it is the flex. But like Trigger and his broom.

Problem with the hand operated ones was (a) you couldn't generate enough power for a transmitter (receiving was easy) and (b) you couldn't carry out medical actions at the same time as listening to the doctor in Woolagong giving instructions.

Mind you I never could work out how you continue to pedal while applying mouth to mouth resucitaion

The Treager sales bumph always made reference to the many emergencies that their equipment had helped to give timely advice over.
