I think I'd be a bit worried.
When we lived in a huge forrest in Eastern Europe we saw deer everyday on our walks, the two dogs we had at the time would chase them, especially Baruska who had it embeded into her mind that she had to feed her 'pack'

But never did either dog get anywhere close, deer are very fleet of foot when chased.

But would be adviseable to have lots of space, my main worry was one very minor road which had on average ten cars a day in summer (and half that in winter.)

We sometimes go to Teddingfoot Lake. We have seen Muntjac deer there. Max chased one but gave up. As you say, deer are fleet of foot. Even for a collie. Or maybe it just got into the woods while we walked on.

Unfortunately deer are killed and injured by dogs every year - either directly or indirectly (ie the dog runs a deer into a road, or into a fence/wall etc) and of course there is also the danger of a dog following a deer into the road and either being killed or causing a road collision.

Obviously it is not always possible to know when you might run into deer in the countryside and so can't always avoid a chasing incident, but if I knew my dogs were going to chase deer and I was in an area where deer were known to frequent I would have them on a lead.

And if you don't know, you don't know.

Aye, accidents can happen. You can't foresee every eventuality.
