OK your internet connection is spot on.

I wonder if any software (Firewall, Anti-virus etc) automatically updated themselves which reset their settings meaning you had to allow access again.

Are you still having problems connecting?

this morning is the first time I didn't have problems when I allowed the avast to access the internet I pressed it to remember this action and also this morning I'm getting my email alerts back which had stopped since the problem

thanks for your help

I was just worried at first that I might have a virus that was causing it but have run the scans and everything is fine

Don't know if it's related and I'm rubbish at computers.

Sometimes, if NTL servers have gone down or there's been some problem like that, the only way I can get the Internet to work after the problem has been served is to switch everything off, including the modem, wait for 2 mins, then switch on and it rights itself.

Remember you should also frequently scan for viruses with good, updated anti-virus software such as AVG or Anti-VIR. There's a whole world of difference between a virus, trojan or VBS worm, and spyware.
