Certifect Flea/Tick Treatment

A friend's border collie boy (Dad to my Gem and older brother to my Guy) is at the vet after collapsing with severe neurological signs following treatment with the above yesterday.

Has anyone any experience of using this? I must admit I had never heard of it.

The active ingredients are fipronil and amitraz and methoprene, amitraz can casue a sedatory effect

It has the same ingredients as Frontline apart from the amitraz which is extra. A sedatory effect isn't quite the same as severe neurological signs though and he's been at the vet since yesterday

I used this for the first time earlier this month and I have to say my dog was very quiet and a little subdued for a couple of days after application. We also had a separate incident around the same time so not sure if that was the cause for her being a little "down". I'm going to use again at the beginning of June and will obviously be looking for similar signs and if they happen again, I will be off to see my vet. I'll keep you posted. Sorry to hear your dog wasn't well and hope he's made a good recovery

copied and pasted

The benefits of CERTIFECT are to eliminate ticks within 24 hours, disrupt tick attachment and indirectly reduce the risk of transmission of tick-borne diseases, eliminate fleas and prevent environmental flea contamination. The most common side effects are hypersalivation, vomiting, lethargy, hyperglycaemia, bradycardia or bradypnea. Signs are transitory and generally resolve without treatment within 24 hours.

Not yet Malka, but thanks for asking. I will post as soon as I hear anything.

He's home and doing better. Not eating and very quiet. His vet has been in touch with the manufacturers to try and establish what happened. If they come up with anything, I'll obviously pass it on.

Thanks for your replies.

Thank you for the update. Fingers crossed that it will not have caused any permanent problems.

The manufacturers have come up with a lot of reasons why it couldn't have been the Certifect (no surprise there!) but they have refunded the cost of the treatment. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence in the States that this has happened before so beware!
