Rehoming help

Hello,

A friend of a friend is re-homing their 8 years old Doberman due to a break up.
They have contacted various rescues and the RSPCA has advised them that is is very likely that the dog will be PTS due to its age and breed. So we are considering re-homing him. Apart from visiting the dog to see if we match and having him meet up with our pup on neutral territory, do you have any other advice?

Thanks
Sandrine

Hi there.

How big hearted of you to step in and try and save this dog.

One thing I would suggest is to get in touch with a Dobermann rescue. If you do really want this lad, they may be able to give you any help/support you need and if you are really only taking him to save him being pts, they may be able to help with other options - e.g. finding him an alternative home.

I don't personally know any of the dobe specific rescues, but I would've thought there was no harm in giving them a phone and asking for some advice?

Do let us know how you get on - if you do decide to take him on, I hope you'll tell us all about him and post some photos

good luck whatever you decide

Hi there,

Thanks for the advice, we were thinking of getting another dog in a few months anyway so it would just bring it forward for us.
The advice on the page is really good.
One of our neighbour had a dobie so I'm sure we can rope him in to help if need be.

That sounds great then

I think rehoming a dog from a loving home rather than from kennels can be a little harder in that usually rescue dogs are happy to get out of their current enviroment whereas with a direct rehome that may not be the case.

All I'd say is to make sure you give him plenty of time to adjust to the changes - don't expect too much too soon. I'm sure you he will well reward you in time for taking him in.

Best of luck, I'd love to hear how you get on

there is also Dobermann Rehoming Association lady called Chris Omar (based in chobham i think). If you find you arent suited then please give her a call. also dobesinneed they are london based and only rehome around that area i believe.

If you do have him my only advice would be get a bigger sofa and bed when you meet n greet with your pupster i would suggest neutral territory (park or similar) if the dog hasnt been well socialised and has his bits he could get a bit snotty if you went to 'his' house.

theres a fab forum on the DRA site where you will be made most welcome for any dobe advice you may need from how to introduce to what to expect (from not ever going to the toilet unaccompanied again to how to come to terms with your underwear being strewn round the garden)www.dobermannrehome.co.uk

hope it goes well! you wont regret it x
