Red Mites?

Has anyone heard of Red Mites in dogs?

A customer came in a while ago and told my Mum her dog has red mites, and she'd been to the vets to have it treated.

Now she's going round telling everyones who's dog is scratching that it might have red mites and to go to the vets

I've never heard of it/them, and googling doesn't bring up much......only things about red mange/demodex mange, and i've seen her dog since, and it certainly doesn't have demodex!

Anyone?!

Never heard of them. Google says there are red mites that only affect birds and 'red spider mites' that you find on plants (I think I've seen them on concrete/slabs etc. when it's warm). Must be some confusion somewhere?

Have heard of berry mites or harvest / hay mites ?

Maybe she just got the name wrong?

the boys here had hay mites (we think) making Max really scratch so bad he had sores.

We treated with Stronghold and bathed him in hibiscrub.

The vet told her they were 'red mites', and the only place she goes other than the pavement is the field.
Her dog doesn't really play with other dogs, and never runs off into hedges etc.

I agree. But local regions quite frequently have local names for things so perhaps 'red mites' is how they are know locally?

The only red mite I know is what you can get with chickens and they are a knightmare to get rid of... Never heard of dogs getting them though
We have chickens and the red mite was rife during June and if not caught quick enough, it can kill achicken within days

Thanks everyone!

Probably harvest mites by the sounds of it!
She's a little old, and gets confused easily, but gets everyone else worrying!
It just helps if we know what she's talking about so we can advise people properly!
