Severe anxiety

Hello,

Recently my sweet boy, Trooper, has developed extreme anxiety that occurs both day and night (although it is more severe at night) that manifests as whining, some panting, restlessness, pacing, and a seemingly intense noise phobia to almost any sound. He is losing his hearing and this no doubt is playing a role. I have begun to use Rescue Remedy to reduce his anxiety and I am currently trying to find the lowest, effective dose. Does anyone have experience with Rescue Remedy? Trooper is a 51-lb. dog. Five to six drops absolutely knocks him out although it takes about 2 hours for the effects to kick in. I would like to judge "take the edge off" rather than keep him in a comatose state. I would prefer not to use anything stronger than Rescue Remedy since Trooper had liver cancer (I say had because we hope we got it all). I also would be interested to know if anyone has encountered side effects with Rescue Remedy. I would appreciate any advice about dosing and side effects.
Thank you,
Trooper's Mom -- Lisa

My dog has sound phobia too and I use an anxiety wrap. It is obviously non medicinal and seems to help. I also use valerian and skullcap leading up to firework season.

I will be interested to see how you get on with the rescue remedy.

This is the anxiety wrap

I am with Fudgeley re Scullcap and Valerian tablets also, they wont cause drowsiness but should help take the edge off whats stressing him until you can ty desensitising or aternative ways to halp him relax hopefully to the point of not needing to give him anything for it. Skullcap and Valerian are herbal so no chemicals at all, but I always still give a personal disclaimer to check with the vet first if unsure or/and contact the manufacturers who are very helpful indeed
[ Skullcap and Valerian tabs are a veterinary licensed medicine ]

It might be worth Trooper having a BAER test also to see exactly what level his hearing is at - you would need to google BAER for your area to find the nearest place for testing if none on this list are within reach, I`m, not sure how up to date the list is, [ should`nt be expensive either so could well be worth giving a go for Trooper just to see what`s what].

BAER testing in various countries and areas
