Dog walk woes

Hi as neither of my dogs are allowed to take part in agility i run other peoples dogs, ive been running a friends dog now for 6 weeks at one session a week. The problem im having is he has just become petrified of the dog walk, he will take treats off of it but if u go as though your gonna walk him on to it he pulls away and then hides underneath it.I have also just heard he now has become scared of walking up the stairs at home and when hes built up his courage he bolts up them. As you can imagine i dont want him to become a nervous wreck and would love any advice of how to overcome this problem as hes a great boy and considering i only see him once a week he does really well working with me. Dont know if this helps he 16 months old male german shepard x and he is neutred

Has this dog had a vet check? One of the biggest reasons dogs rush or avoid steps, heights etc is due to an injury etc

I second the vet check, it could be the particular movement of stairs or an incline that is aggravating him. E.g. I'm suffering from a knee problem that makes stairs quite painful and I discovered that going down ramps hurts a lot more than walking flat surfaces, jumping, etc. too. Different movements affect difference muscles so the running around and so on may not rule out an injury.

Dogs are not designed to do stairs and they should be avoided where possible IMHO. (One of the many reasons my dogs are not allowed upstairs in the house).

Stairs put different stresses on different parts of the body than regular jumps etc

So do not assume that because your dog can negotiate some obstacles he is injury free..........

Have you tried lowering the dog walk so that it's only just raised off the ground? I've seen one resting on recycling boxes (approx milk crate height) to reassure a GSD who'd got spooked by it.

Yes where we go there are three dog walks and one is very low its also a giant breed one so a lot wider than a normal one bless him he's still petrified of it
