Is it ?

the same thing looks almost certain to happen now?

Theres no overnight fix ( ask the conservative/socialist/CND/pro nuker Blair you cant asve the NHS in 24 hours )

You dont get rid of rot in a day, you have to cut away and cut back to clear it out. Were the conservatives to get in the next election, there may welll be a rise in unemployment but they wont be responsible - you cant possibly say that - oh no wait - they will be because it will be because of Thatcher back in the eighties....

If I ever had gone into a large factory or somewhere, where I was forced to join a union I'd probably have left, coz like I say, why should I have jeopardised my OWN job which I might have been very happy doing, just because some other bod suddenly got unhappy about something I didn't agree with?? LIke I said, I don't do sheep, I do my own thing and I wouldn't have been happy sitting out in the road on a cold winter's day when I could have been slaving away in a nice warm office, just to satisfy somebody's gripe I didn't even know and above all something I might NOT have agreed with either?! It's all wrong to me, hence why I don't like unions. Each to their own.
One day H, you may have been the person with the gripe.
You are lucky you weren't.
It's about social responsibility IMO....

What are the main differences in the way employment was calculated back there compared to now out of interest?

Perhaps you have been fortunate enough never to have needed a union.
Unions ensure that people are treated fairly and that bosses don't become so money oriented that they forget about the rights of their workers.
They also ensure that the bosses don't put public safety at risk at times.
yeah unions ensured people were treated fairly back in the miners day, by not allowing those that wanted to to go to work, and offering them little in the way of protection, they made sure people were treated fairly by throwin out paid up union members wishes to ballot for a strike - gee thats fair - they then break the law in doing so and without consulting ALL their members refuse d to pay their legal fines and subjected their members to further poverty.
Yes they ensure that the public are not at risk, unless of course you happened to be a mini cab driver at the time of the strike, then you were fully entitled to be beaten to death as were members of the union who wanted their paypacket.
Union bosses definately dont put money first - they dont need to most of them are paid better than company executives while the union fee payers barely get by.
Those union leaders were fair over the recent enforced teachers walkout - tell me what proportion of union members voted to strike???????? please??

Yes, but as I keep on saying, if I had of been that person, I would have gone into my boss's office and had it out with him, it is MY problem, not the rest of his staff's problem, and I certainly wouldn't have expected the rest of his workforce to walk out with me if I just left. My problem, it's up to me to sort it out, and it should only affect ME if I lose, not the poor Boss and his whole workforce and most definitely not the whole of the Country either! I'm a loner, I don't do crowds, I work alone in secrecy!

Think in the future that this country will need to welcome a leader like Thatcher.

but Labour arent in power are they? - You dont see these guys as Labour do you? apparently not - but its that old Labour contradiction again that 3 years into term an employment rate can be pinned on a conservative govt , but anythnig wrong with a labour govt is from eithteen years ago hahaha its so daft its laughable
