Celebrity Mastermind

I've just watched Celebrity Mastermind.
Nice to see that young lady (?name) answer questions on dogs and for her fee to go to the PDSA.

My question is does anyone know what is wrong with Mel Smith?
He looked so dreadfully ill and had difficulty speaking clearly.
I have googled him but can't find an answer.

I thought that too Jen, and I wondered if he had or maybe was recovering from throat cancer or something? His voice was really gruff, far more than a "smoker's" voice wasn't it. I'd like to know too, I used to like him, he was very funny with Griff Rhys Jones (sp????)!

Oh, I didn't see him walking, only sitting in the chair answering the questions! You've got me at it now, I'm going to try googling now!

Just found this little snippet, whether it's true or not, I don't know?

Quote "Smith ended up seriously ill in hospital in 1999 after consuming more than 50 Nurofen tablets, the culmination of a growing addiction to the pills. He said at the time that the pressures of film work were a contributing factor, along with a desperate need to ease the pain caused by gout. Unquote

I think there's more to it than that though

"Griff Rhys Jones had already stated in an earlier television appearance that Smith was suffering the effects of the early stages of Parkinson’s Disease".
