At what age does a dog lift his leg to urinate?

Hope this is the right place for this thread.

When does a male dog start to lift his leg to pee??

Dodger (the rescue) is about 5.5 months old (thats a guess, anything between 4 months and 8 months), and he still squats (well barely), sometimes just stands and pees.

Is this okay? At first I thought he was too weak to lift his leg, but that cannot be the case any more.

Finn has just started to do it in the last few weeks so he started at 7 months but it is not every time he pees.

hmmmm ... well that makes me feel a little better, thanks Carole. But Dodger could be 8.5 - 0 months old (we will never know). If a dog does not learn to lift his leg, is it a problem? Is there something wrong?

Hi Tam There was a thread a little while ago with Tuti and Archie when Archie became a man all dogs differ, some do it early some not....I guess when Dodger feels confident enough to mark his boundries he will do it the odd few dogs never do it !!

About 6 - 8 months for us. Mind you, he still gets it wrong at a year and pees all over his paws, hence his nickname, "P*ss Paws"

Takoda still doesn't do it and he is nearly 1!

He does like to pee on things though...So I know he likes to 'mark' but he only will if he can stand over them. When we first get out on a walk he pee's about 20 times trying as much as possible trying to get it on stuff, but never has lifted his leg...lol...If Keena pee's he also pee's on her pee straight after and she will do the same to his...lol...Stupid dogs...LOL
