Need Help With Tropical Fish!

I'm looking after some tropical fish at the mo until their owners come back from their hols. Everything is going fine, but I've noticed the water is starting to get a bit low to the point where it's starting to get below the level of the pump!

What should I do? I was thinking of topping it up but isn't the water in tropical fish tanks balanced with ammonia or nitrates or something????

Not really sure if I should just stick some more water in or leave it til they come back (Tuesday). Any ideas anyone?

Cheers x

water out the tap needs to have the chemicals taken out before you can use it and it also needs to be the right temperature..
i only have a coldwater tank,so i would leave it,just move the filter down-hope that helps a bit x

Ooh that's an idea I hadn't thought of that.

I'll go and try it!

Tropical fish don't bite do they?

What about catfish?

Ok can't move the filter as it's the full length of the tank!

I'll see if I can find the water additive now.

What does leaving the water outside do to make it safe? Just curious.

there should be the correct chemicals near the tank with full instructions on the back. if you find then add tap water to a clean bucket and leave out until it reaches room temp. (chemicals) they might not necessarally be in a big bottle ours are only about 5 cm tall.

I am no expert but I top my sons tank up straight from the tap and never had a problem. He does have stuff to add to the water but only use it when doing a water change of 50 %.

No they don't bite, I still have all my fingers!

Ok I've found Water Additive, is that the same thing?

Do I not need to heat the water somehow as the temp in the tank is currently 26c!
