Have you ever been PRESENT when this happens?

I have, and I can assure you that many animals are NOT stunned sufficiently. Most are, but not all.
No, not at all. I am fully aware of what happens in slaughterhouses although I have never witnessed it. The animals are supposed to be stunned before any gruesome bits, but I gather that a few miss out on the mercifulness of stunning - horrible.

My understanding of halal is that the animals are killed by cutting their throats and allowing them to bleed to death - no merciful stunning first. If I am wrong, then I apologise.

I would like to be a vegetarian, and would be if I thought it was healthier. I happen to believe that if we are given teeth to eat different types of food, then that is what we should eat. I don't eat meat every day, as a grown adult female past reproductive age, I don't need to, but at least once or twice a month I eat meat because I think it is good for me.

But my diet is probably 90% veggie.

There is a slaughterhouse just behind one of our local butchers where the meat is sold.

Even an animal that has been stunned will move/spasm after death...

When we have slaughtered the turkeys for Christmas, even after there is no heartbeat and the head has been severed, the body continues to move, as the electrical nerve impulses are still active....
