Well there are as many routes to success in this exercise as there are to any other.

I am not sure how you trained your dog to retrieve?

But back chain retrieves by teaching the dog to hold first, then moving the articles to the floor and then increasing the distance.

I do not combine this with a search square until a dog will go out and pick up anything on the ground with their front teeth and not move even if I pick up their lips or pull item etc.

Once they will do this with any article.

I combine this with the square poles which I have started off totally separately with food.

I also train my dogs to do a hand touch ie stuff their shnozzle into my palm to reduce the risk of dropping item etc.

With my GSD I ONLY use food for each article (food calms toys excite) and never play with the article. I use a schedule of variable ratio of reinforcement with the ball so it maintains momentum.

But there are lots of other methods

Could you explain how you train the hold and pick up with the front teeth. My boy will pick up anything but I would like to strengthen his hold and stop chomping
