A new name for cross breeds, maybe!

we had a friend over from South Africa and were discussing dogs as he renamed Hector- Horse- for the time he was here.

anyway, in SA cross breeds/mongrels are commonly known as................Pavement Specials

i thought this was a great name.

it would certainly stop the huge prices charged for them

While I do not support the crossbreeding of any breeds and the sad fashion cross breed market.
I would not belittle any crossbreed, they are a dog none the less and should be loved as any pedigree by their owners.
Perhaps we should think up more apt names for the people that breed these dogs

A name for 'designer dog' breeders or a name for those that have had none pedigree dogs that have bred ?

Either. Anyone that crossbreeds for money or breeds with no history of the dogs and no health tests etc.
Belittle the breeders not the dogs that didn't have a say in it.
The term cross breed is fine in my book. It describes what the dog is.

I don't look at a dog and say that's a pedigree and that's a crossbreed. I say that's a "whatever breed it is" or that's a crossbreed.
Both are what they are Dogs, it is people and the press that give names out. To call a dog a pavement special or any other derogatory name is to show disrespect to the dog and to be honest snobbery.
I've had a crossbreed previously (family dog, rescued) and i would find the term pavement special insulting to his memory. Deal with the problem ie, the puppy farmers and designer dog breeders (which term we should refrain from using otherwise the press will continue to use it) and not tar the poor dogs with these horrible names.

hear hear!
There's a lovely "hound type" up the road from me, (roughly boxer x foxhound) when I greet a dog of no obvious "pedigree" or one unknown to me I always say to the owner something like "that's a nice sort of dog" if I like it, which usually I do, and would never ask "what's in it?". It doesn't matter. "Brownie" is a working dog and a big softy of you tickle his ears, he and his Irish setter housemate walk past me most afternoons on their walk.
I hate labels. It is what it is.

I think "pavement specials" sounds as if they're describing strays rather than crossbreeds.
I have a crossbreed of unknown mix and and when asked what his breed is, which is quite often, we just say "Jinja ninja" . Those too dopey to know any different think he's a rare breed, others realise we're just joking.

We always called our crossbreeds "Bitza's" - bits of this and bits of that.
