I'm a smoker and im all for the ban ... kinda .. but as a smoker i know there are gonna be a lot of very grumpy people out there (especially in the pub) when they cant have a smoke ... is it wise to ban it in pubs? poeple are already violent enough with a drink in them, gonna be 10 times worse when they arent allowed a smoke too

Yes but..as I have said... here in Ireland where the ban has been in place for over a while now, you CAN smoke in a pub - but you have to go into a "smoking area" to do it. The larger pubs have created enclosed (but open to the sky, which is part of the law) patio's with those huge heaters and tables and chairs so you can still enjoy the live music and whatever else is going on.
The secret to it's success is that it is enforced very strictly - you are just as likely to end up in the local Garda station and fined in court the next day for smoking inside the premises as for fighting, brawling or general drunken behaviour - there is a well known cartoon about it in most pubs! So everyone understands the rules and plays within them.... well nearly all
I am not sure that the less effective, softly softly UK police would be able - or allowed - to enforce it once it comes in with the same vigour, it will be interesting to see what happens
(Before UK police officers jump all over me, I spent 49 years in the UK, I am British, and my brother is a police sergeant.)

But are people really that lame that they can't go out for a drink/socialise for a few hours without having to have a smoke?

Inca your posts killed me and Vicki I'm a bit on the lardy side now!
Yes I do smoke, I smoke in my home as does my husband, we have on numerous occasions band smoking from the house as it stinks! But come the winter we are back indoors puffing again. We have 3 sheds so we could alternate, and the garage, so a different venue each evening.
Joking aside I appreciate the health aspect and the affliction on others, so I am in total agreement to a public indoor area ban, as others should not be forced to inhale other people's smoke. I would like to give up the weed, and probably will do at some stage. I think Roy Castle brought this to the fore, and the subsequent campaign about passive smoking. I will add we do not smoke in restaurents, and in non smokers company.
All this chat about ciggies...going for one now.......in the garage!!

It's not a case of being "lame" - nicotine is a drug, and smokers are addicted to it, therefore the level has to be topped up. During the 40 years I smoked, there were many times when I didn't enjoy the cigarette I was smoking, but the habit had to be fed.

My Mum smokes, and has done for over 30 years.
When she goes out, she NEVER takes her ciggies with her. This includes going out shopping, for meals, for drinks etc.

We just got back from a 2 week holiday - she didn't take her ciggies with her, didn't buy any, didn't smoke any.
