And that makes three...

17 days into the new year and we have already lost three animals

Last Friday we had to have Flora the sheep put to sleep after a long illness -

She's the one at the back in that photo. She was a very old sheep and had a good life but constant UTI's, incontinence and bladder stones got the better of her

Then Taffy who I posted about in the 'Gone but not forgotten' section -

And today we lost Star as she could no longer hold herself up on her back legs due to severe arthritis. We have tried various things for the last week including injecting her joints with local anaesthetic but nothing helped. The really sad part is that just yesterday we took in a new horse intended to be her companion after AJ passed away from a brain tumour before Christmas. She never got to meet him

Sleep well Star, Flora and Taffy.

For those who might be interested in our new boy...

Meet Rhino the 17hand Irish Draught horse.

Heartbreaking. I hope the rest of the year is a happier one.

And I hope the beautiful Rhino has a long and happy life.

Aw Jen how sad. Will you now be looking for a companion for the one intended as a companion?

I've found it hard enough to cope with the deaths of my own pets - albeit they would be a decade or so apart. And I still 'grieve' all of them. I don't know how you toughen up enough for this to be almost a regular feature of your working life.

I used to go home in floods of tears every time we lost a cat or kitten at the cat sanctuary. And with over 200 of them living there it was not a daily but generally at least a weekly occurrence. The only silver lining to it being it did free up space for another destitute cat otherwise we were permanently full and overflowing.

commiserations....

Seems to go in waves

it is a few years now since I lost my three remaining Siamese. They were so close to each other they went one after the other, the last one literally pining to death for his siblings.. and a pet lamb, and three pet hens to mink

It has been easier since

So please God it eases now for you
