Dog owner receives ten year ban

An elderly dog suffering from a severe skin condition and an eye and ear infection has been put to sleep and his owner banned from keeping animals for ten years.

Sabre, a 13-year-old crossbreed, had not received any veterinary treatment for months and was suffering a great deal of discomfort and pain. A concerned member of the public contacted the Scottish SPCA. Inspector Sam MacDonald, of the Scottish SPCA, said that by the time Sabre came to them, his condition was too advanced to respond to treatment. With veterinary advice, it was decided that the only humane option would be to “end his suffering”.

The dog's owner, Stephen Rowlands of North Lanarkshire, was convicted of causing unnecessary suffering by failing to provide Sabre with the veterinary treatment he needed, and fined Ł360. Mr MacDonald said that the Scottish SPCA are pleased with the ban, adding:

“Pets rely on their owners entirely for their wellbeing and it is unacceptable for someone to ignore their animal while it suffers in silence. Sabre should have received treatment long before we intervened and the fact that he had to be put to sleep is a tragic outcome.”
