It's not the first time this has happened but a beagle, picked up as a stray in Alabama USA, has survived the gas chamber.
Daniel was put in the gas chamber to be euthanized along with 18 other dogs from a crowded animal shelter. But incredibly, when an animal control officer opened the door, Daniel was waiting right there, tail wagging. No other dog survived.

Now, a number of animal charities have put their weight behind Daniel to ensure he is not sent to the chamber again. He had a temporary home in Tennessee with Karen Rudoph, who co-runs Schnauzer Savers Rescue of West Tennessee. Here he acquired the name Daniel, after the biblical Daniel who walked unscathed from a lion's den.
Then the charity Eleventh Hour Rescue brought Daniel to New Jersey with the help of Pilots and Paws. Given the last name Milagro, which means miracle in Spanish, Daniel Milagro is currently being fostered by Eleventh Hour volunteer Jill Pavlik while the organisation finds a suitable home for him.
At 20 pounds, Daniel is underweight and his immune system is slightly compromised but otherwise he is in good health. Daniel was given a clean bill of health, despite his experience in the gas chamber.
Described as “fun loving” and “very sweet”, Daniel - not surprisingly - has already attracted a great deal of interest from people looking to make him part of their family.
