Speaking as someone who lives in a Country where there IS a total smoking ban in public buildings and workplaces - I can say that it has been a great success for most people. Against all predictions, it has not adversely affected pub trade - and the Irish are dedicated smokers! - and the craic in the designated smoking areas is so good that many non-smokers go out there too to join the fun! For those who had given up going to pubs - as I had - it's great to go into a clean smelling pub and get home with my clothes NOT stinking of smoke (no offence smokers - I just don't like it, personally).
My town still has 10 shops and 12 pubs and nobody has gone bust yet! We seemed to have reached a working compromise where smokers and non-smokers can co-exist much more harmoniously than before and enjoy their nights out.
I went back to the UK recently and the reception area of the hotel was right next to the bar. The smell hit me straight away, it's amazing how noticeable it is when you have got used to it not being there - ask anyone who has given up the habit

I hate smoking and am all for the ban! My Dad and Brother smoke in the house and it really gets to me that I have no control over my health when they're sat there puffing away!

Surprisingly I think a lot of the smokers are in favour of it to help them quit (minus Inca of course! ). My Bro gave up for 8 months once and then slipped cos he went out for drink and lit up! So in that sense I think he'll be glad of a ban to help him quit!

Here's a bizarre conversation I had with my Dad yesterday (I was complaining about him smoking again! ) I said "I hate the fact that you smoke it's so bad for our health, it should be banned". And then he said, "Well alcohols bad for your health so lets ban that!. So I said "Yeah, but every time I have a pint I don't force one down your throat!" And that is how I feel about passive smoking!
