Dead Seal

The dogs 'found' a dead seal at Tensmuir beach (near Dundee) a while ago.

I have a picture of them 'investigating' it but wasn't sure if would offend anybody 'squeemish' if I put it on here.??????

I was wondering what could have killed it (round these parts) as it was fairly well 'eaten' by something.

Thought it may have just been pecked clean by birds but that would have taken a while and it didn't smell at all.

I guess some of the sea birds would soon peck it clean and fish also would eat it if it died at sea, did you report it ? Seals can get some really nasty viruses similar to those dogs get so dead and sick ones they are best avoided.

Did you hear on the radio this morning a lady out shopping (cumberland I think four miles from the sea ) passed a seal while driving home

She managed to get it into the boot of her car and took it home, it is now in a sanctuary awaiting 'repatriation' in the sea

No I didn't report it. Took a pic as the dogs were by it and just left it. It was just at the tide line so had obvoiusly 'just' been washed up.

Somebody did tell me about the viruses afterwards otherwise I'd have got the dogs away. Having said that they didn't really pay it any more attention than they would a bit of driftwood.

No idea what sort of seal it was. Would you know ?

Not sure I want to see the pic but I've seen a fair few dead seals washed up on the beach over the years.

As someone said, It'll probably have died at sea and been picked at by other sea-life and birds. I've occasionally known them to die having been hit by boats/caught in propellar blades but I think far more die of natural causes.
