I think you are sensible-you really don't want things to escalate as you don't know how some people will react if you have a go back (even though I have myself in the past!)

Sorry to hear about your walk-sounded really scary. Hope you are recovering now and don't meet this irresponsible people again. From experience they usually blame you even though it is not your fault. Called "transference" I believe!
