Buster - 4 year old Patterdale Terrier in Oxford

Buster is a 4 year old Black PatterdaleTerrier and is currently on foster in Oxford.

The Buster fact file

Dog status: Very good
Cat status: Will chase, cannot be rehomed with cats, small animals or birds.
Child status: Good; could be rehomed with children over 5.
House training: Excellent
Home alone: Does not like to be left and due to epilepsy would need to be with someone.
Basic training: Good basic training and walks well on the lead. High prey drive.
Additional Information: Currently on medication for Epilepsy

Buster is in foster with a gaggle of terriers and has fitted in great. He could be rehomed as an only dog or with company. He is however very playful and will need a tolerant playmate if rehomed with canine company as he nips bums and legs when playing. There is no aggression though; just terrier play. He cannot be rehomed with cats, small animals or birds. He was initially afraid of the horses that he is in foster with but now he has gained confidence he would prefer to chase them and while the fosterer is highly experienced with terriers we would be very cautious rehoming him around livestock even if he is kept on lead.

Buster is good with people and has met children from 6 upwards and has been fine so could be rehomed with children over 5. He would need someone who was in most of the day as he worries when you leave. He hasn’t been left long in his foster home as Buster has epilepsy. He could be rehomed with a worker if Buster could go to work as well or he would suit a retired couple.

Buster has good basic training already and walks very well on the lead. Buster however has a huge chase instinct and is not particularly motivated by food or toys so would need to be kept on lead at least initially and possibly long term as he will chase livestock and poultry.

Buster is housetrained, non-destructive, non-possessive and hasn’t shown any sign of aggression. He travels well in the car as long as the wind screen wipers aren’t on. If it’s raining they are fair game! He hasn’t tried to jump fencing but due to his high prey drive we would be looking for a secure garden.

Buster has recently been diagnosed with epilepsy which is an easily manageable condition with most dogs living a long and active life. At the moment Buster is having half a 30mg Epiphen tablet twice a day. This needs to be given at a set 12 hour interval each day with food. The cost for 1 tablet a day is 12p though he will need 6 monthly blood tests at approximately £50 to check the levels. His medication started at the end of June 2012 when he came into our care and he has been fit free. Previously he was having approximately 2 fits a month in quick succession lasting 3-4 mins and remaining dazed for 5 mins afterwards. He has been neutered since coming into our care and it has been suggested that the epilepsy may have been related to the high levels of testosterone that Buster had and that if he remains seizure free over the next 12 months that the medication can be reduced to see if the epilepsy was related to him being entire.

In summary Buster is a very loving and well-mannered boy and would make a lovely family dog however he does need someone around most of the time and does have a strong chase instinct. He would probably be best suited to an active retired couple and is definitely not a first time dog and needs a terrier experienced home.

All Hope Rescue dogs are neutered, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated and microchipped prior to rehoming. A homecheck will be required, and you will need to come and meet the dog with your own dogs and family. We have a suggested minimum donation of £160.
