zoundz and other ratty people

hi!
i have some rat questions and i hope you can help me...
in a few weeks time i am getting a rat. beautifull little girl
as i dont know much about rats im am trying really hard to educate myself about rats
now... do i need a big cage? or it is 60cms x 50 cms ok?
as i have seen on many forums that people have biiig cages for their rats but i want to have rattie running free when i will be at home. only to be closed during the night and when i am not home? is this possible with rats?

do they smell like mices?
can they be litter trained?
can i use pellets instead of wood sawings and put a blankie for a bed?
next to rat food and fresh veggie, what can they eat?

she is now 3-4 weeks old. when can she leave her mummy?

i am full of questions i know!
but i would really apreciate your help
so thank you in advance

If you send my your email address I will send you a link to the a forum for rats as not allowed to put on here.

Theres all the info & help on rats you want. You say your getting 1 rat its best if you have 2 (same sex)as they are sociable animals & dont do well on their own.

Firstly - please get two - it's not fair to get only one they need same sex company. Please also make sure they are 6 weeks when you pick them up. A good breeder will not let them go until 6 weeks, and certainly not let them go alone - they will always give a minimum of a pair. I would strongly advise seeking a breeder via the NFRS - pm me for details

erm... the cage you stated is too small - i believe off the top of my head 2 square foot is the min size for each rat. If you check my website out, you can see the cages I use if that's any help

and no wood pellets are as bad as woodshavings. 100% paper cat litter is OK - morrisons own - shreded newspaper, cut up cardboard etc etc.

if you need more help PM me!

xx

ooh... just noticed you aren't in the UK... erm... you could always do a google search for fancy rat societies in your own country most countries have some sort of organisation!
