Getting a Puppy

I'm getting a puppy in a few days and I was wondering if anyone knew any methods or things that worked for them to build confidence and learning skills. The last two dogs I've had I got from shelters so they were older. This puppy will be ten weeks and I want to make sure I do everything right.

If this pup is from a breeder, paticulaly one who whelps in their home and allows the pups to meet people and hear domestic noise and you have met at least the dam and she is frendly then I am sure you will have no problem. Take it out in your arms as much as you can before it is 12 weeks old, they seem calm and laid back till then and after 12 weeks some become warry.

Hi Barbara congratulations on the pup. I was like you and hadnt had a puppy for quite a while before I got Saffy. What I found seemed to help with Saffy was making sure she met other dogs and learnt socialisation skill. (I took her friends houses who had dogs and freinds visited me with their dogs(innoculated ones!).

Hi Barbara.
Check at your vets and see if they run socialization classes, ours does, basically once puppy has had their first jab, they can attend these classes with other puppies of the same age, and they can play and learn social skills together supervised.

Im not an expert Babs, but with Rocky I've just taken things at a steady pace, introducing him to new things slowly. I've heard it takes two months for them to settle in with their new owners and feel comfortable with you, so once we've had him for two months I shall introduce him to louder noises busier places and he should have enough confidence in 'me' to kno I'll look after him.

Hope this helps and good luck!!!

I will socialize her a lot

Azz, how long have you had Rocky? I didn't realize it took 2 months for the dog to feel comfortable. My other dogs I got when they were about 5 months, and they just fit right in and made themselves at home, lol

Thanks for the Avatar help Azz! Roxy, I like your new one, but I miss those great teeth on your dog

I'm getting a bandog. A neo/performance AB. I was looking for a neapolitan mastiff, but everyone I talked to said they couldn't walk as far as a mile or run. So based on my lifestyle I need a bandog. The puppy will have the neo personality though, and that's what I'm looking for
