Bones & choking

I saw a local dog owner today at the shops, I hadn't seen her in the park for a while, she told me that one of her dogs died - he choked on a bone, just awful.

Never give cooked bones to a dog, the cooking process dries out the bone and makes it very hard to break down in the same way as raw bones. This is something more people should know about but seems to be ignored by many.

I agree that no cooked bones should be fed on purpose to our dogs. Raw bones of all descriptions are safe and can be digested. There are however, some that suggest that the very dense weight bearing bones can cause some teeth to chip.

As for choking on bones, our dogs are just as likely to choke, on anything else they choose to chew and swallow, including our ever popular dry kibble !!
