Gutted

I noticed yesterday that around jakes eyes and inside his ears, were a bit red. Today, they have become much worse, and in such a sort space of time. He only stopped his steroids a week ago! It had finally cleared up, and now its back

I just dont know what to do now... We have been at the vets so many times and everytime we just come away with steroids and no answers! I dont know whether to change vets, coz people keep telling me that they just seem to be out for the money... The first vet I saw didnt seem interested in anything I said (and was convinced it was a mite), but the last one I saw (on a few different occassions) was good and believes it is an allergy. Yet doesnt seem bothered about confirming it, and trying to find out what it is to... Guess it will be a call to the vets asap. Not sure if they will be open on monday though... Oh this is going to be a joy im so gutted that we have to go through this all again.

I know how frustrating this can be.

Fingal was very ill when he was younger and as soon as they took blood (to test) he was given steroids as they actually thought he was touch and go.

Addisons (discussed elsewhere) was the issue but within a few hours he was back to normal however the steroids then had to be given on a reducing basis for 2 months.

When the bloods came back they didn't show what they expected so they needed more but the problem was his treatment meant that his blood wasn't showing the problem anymore.

Anyway - that was our situation - the steroids kept him well enough but whilst he was on them - we could never figure out what the problem was.

some blooming vets are just as bad as some doctors.
if they both tell you something different how are you supposed to find a cure
have you looked on the net with his symptoms maybe there are some herbal remedies etc that might help him.

You know my story well with allergy dogs, it can be trial and error and drawn out, I guess persistence is vital.
I would be asking for allergy tests or some sort of blood work to start to rule things out or find the answer to why he is ok on steroids and once off them around his eyes loses hair again.
You are doing the right thing with him, sometimes it is one step back instead of forwards, it is nothing you are doing it is just something that isn't going to go away in a hurry.
Hugs to you and Jake

Poor Jake, he doesn't want to be on steroids forever as that in itself can cause health problems. So the vet's really should be trying to find out what's causing it, instead of just dishing out steroids.
Did the vet's do a skin scrape?
I'd give them a call on Tuesday ( Most vet's will be shut Monday as it's a bank holiday ) and let them know it's come back, and see what they say.

Hope he's feeling better soon xxxx

Just as a thought, what is Jake fed on? as I know one lady with a labrador that used to have really itchy eyes, ears and feet, it turned out he was allergic to the grain in the dog food she was feeding him. She switched the dog onto a different dried food that didn't contain any grains and his itchyness soon cleared up.

Ohhh poor Jake

I agree with Liverbird, some vets (and GP's!) can be crap TBH. I don't know if you have already - but it may be worth seeking a second opinion of a vet from another practice?

Hope he feels better soon poor lamb

I think now I would stop lining your vets pocket and tell them you want a refferal to a specialist.
Yes its more expensive with them initially but they will get to the route of the problem much quicker and may even take one look and know whats going on.
Poor Jake and poor you with all this worry. I hope you get some answers soon.
