Dogs sniff out 35,000 cigarettes in Darlington shops

Dogs have helped sniff out 35,000 illegal cigarettes being stashed in Darlington shops - some in hollowed out doors.

Darlington Council said the contraband was concealed in hollowed out doors, behind hidden panels and in ceilings.

Police and Trading Standards also recovered 500 packets of hand rolling tobacco.

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in selling illegal cigarettes, Durham Police said.

A spokeswoman for Darlington Council said: "In total 35,000 illegal cigarettes and 500 packs of hand rolling tobacco were seized along with a quantity of cash."
