Measurements for dumbells?

I need a smaller dumbell for Sika (HWV) as the one I currently use is really for my lab and is therefore a bit too wide for her. She has started throwing it around in her mouth and I think a more narrow width would help to stop that. How do you measure width for dumbells? Is it just the 'width' of her mouth?

The dumbell should be:

JUST wide enough to fit in the mouth
It should be thick enough to prevent chomping
It should be deep enough ie the ends should be large enough for the dog to pick up cleanly without it hurting its lower jaw (that is why the plastic ones seen in PAH etc are often not a good idea)
