Dog and pigeon what would you do?

What would you do..??

Walking a dog in town, dog see's pigeons..
Said dog goes mad and tries its best to get at pigeons screaming and barking ...

Do you get the dog out of there as soon as you can ignoring the hissy fit ..knowing that you will be in the same place tomorrow.
Or do you sit down on a bench and let the dog run out of steam and hope it gives up...

Hope i am making sense ..lol

Depends...but if it was one of mine I would stay around with them until they had settled, not a behaviour I would want or care to repeat!

Welcome to my world Dex responds like this at the sight of ANY animal - cat, another dog on leash, horse, birds....

I have found that using the 'watch me' can work really nicely but needs quite a bit of practise before you can use it effectively close to the 'trigger' (bird).

Definitely something worth working on, though, if you're going to be around the birds on a regular basis.

So did Rupert.

I had the problem with Rupert and sheep though. He had a right old hissy fit any time we had to pass them. I used to just half drag half carry him past. If we'd had to pass close to them daily I might have tried desensitizing him but usually the way the land sloped hid them from him. Living so close he got used to being able to smell them constantly so that stopped being a trigger quite quickly.

we had a dog like this in at work, only he was obsessed with chasing birds in the field. Crows especially!

We worked a lot on focus techniques, and put him on a harness which also doubled onto his collar so he was secure. The best thing we did discover, was if he was carrying his favourite toy he was good as gold. The birds were second to carrying his little treasure.
Tennis balls can be good, as you can carry them in your pocket and reward a good behaviour by throwing it gently for the dog to catch. Some dogs will them proceed to carry them in their mouths for a while, and will concentrate on this task.

Depends how toy focussed your guy is
