I've just read through the wording of the regulations for Companion SHows and I don't think you are right. If the pedigree classes are non-specific such as AV puppy, AV open etc then basically any dog of any breed whether registered or not can enter. However, if there are classes for specific groups or breeds then these have to be as per recognised and defined as by the KC.
So (ignoring what you believe is a breed or not) I would say something like a NI or Jack Russell could enter the pedigree classes of a Companion show as long as the classes are not split into groups or breeds but an NI would not be able to enter AV Working (or whatever group they feel they belong in) nor could a Jack Russell enter AV Terrier.

I can understand that if someone plans to show their dogs at official KC shows, that they attend Companion shows to gain some experience for both dog and owner, and socialisation for the dog. However, I strongly believe that once the dog begins attending official KC shows, Open shows, Breed Shows, Champ shows etc, then they should not enter pedigree classes at Companion shows.

Pedigree classes at Companion shows are usually based on breed standard, and, for example, there is no comparison between a Bichon Frise that is shown officially at KC shows, and a pet Bichon Frise, who is not of show quality, in my opinion. This is where I feel it becomes unfair.

I have no problem whatsoever with official show dogs entering fun classes, such as Prettiest Bitch and Most Handsome Dog, as they are not judged by breed standard.

Westie N -

Pedigree Classes at Companion shows are judged by KC rules and as you say to the breed standard so therefore if -[taking your example of a Bichon] if one Bichon comes up to the standard more so than another whether it be pet or show dog then this is the dog who should win the class and I do not see anything unfair about that.
If you feel it is unfair then you just don't enter and the charity loses out.

The whole point about companion shows is to have fun and enjoy it and to raise money for charity, so I say all should be welcomed whether it be a crossbreed or Pedigree dog a Pet or a show dog after all the more entries the more money raised.

and just because a dog is a 'pet' doesn't mean it isn't a good dog. One breeder made all her puppy buyers enter the local open show so that she could get the numbers up to gain her points and guess what, it was the puppy buyers dogs that were placed not hers lol!

As i've said, Eunice, those are my opinions and I feel strongly on them and I believe in everything I have stated previously.

Can I ask why you only enter the pedigree classes at Companion show, and never the novelty classes? Just wondering.

Sorry to bring this up again, but correct me if i'm wrong, sam's mam, I remember just last weekend standing a group discussing this issue and I seem to remember making my views very clear indeed. Not at one point did you make any objections to what I said.

As I was explaining how I felt, you said something along the lines of 'aye, uhuh'.

The only time you have disagreed was last night. Funny that. Change of opinion perhaps?

Also, I must stress that it's not if dogs are Kennel Club registered or not that bothers me, it's if dogs are shown at both Companion and Official shows. That's what I disagree with.

There are Rules on entry eligibility under the KC for affiliated shows.
Unaffiliated shows can make up their own rules for fun shows which may differ.

What are you feelings on which `level` of Show dogs should or should not be able to enter Companion and other Fun shows ?
Ey up Patch!
Which level of show dog? Well any KC registered dog can enter a KC show, be it, companion (which no KC reg is required) limit, open or championship. Its up to the owner to deem whether or not the dog is of a standard good enough to compete at the level for which it is entered.

I personally dont think well winning dogs should be exhibited at companion shows, stud book number winners, res CC and CC, or champs cant anyway, but a good quality exhibit IMO should be entering open and above level, but thats just me. Saying that, I do think companion shows are excellent for puppies, an informal occasion with no pressure.
Dawn.

Hi westie n,

I assume you are talking about the discussion during our agility training session last sunday? many discussions take place on a variety of subjects and everyone has an opinion but does not necessarily voice it as indeed i did not.
however i have quite a lot on my mind at the moment as i am trying to organise the largest dog show inverclyde will hold this year in inverclyde so do forgive me if i was not giving you my full attention. but i will say that i dont remember you saying that you were going post your objections on an open forum making it sound as if it was the commitees objections about "clamping down on unfair entries." it clearly states in the schedule the awards that exclude certain pedigree dogs from entering. there is no other rules which state that pedigree dogs who attend licensed shows should not enter along side other pedigree dogs that only enter companion shows and once again the commitee veiw is that these dogs whether show dogs or not will be made most welcome at our event. i also only mentioned last night for this was the first time i knew you had posted on a forum as you will see i only joined yesterday. i hope that you will come along and have a fun day as you did last year, but should you wish to discuss this matter further with the commitee please put it in writing and hand it in at your next agility session and it will be discussed in due course.

As I've stated on the previous thread. I enjoy companion shows for the relaxed atmosphere, and i take all my dogs and try to enter as many classes as possible, including novelty classes. I feel I'm giving to charity whilst practising my dogs.
None of my dogs I take have stud book numbers and to be honest sometimes I win sometimes i dont.
I've lost to working english in AV gundog and to terriers in AV open and it doesnt bother me in the slightest...I trat them as FUN shows.
