I'd say the same as Lucky Star. Is the trainer actually any good at training? I personally can put up with the ramblings of any idiot, as long as they can produce the goods.

That has been my opinion up until now- my dog needs training and she IS good at showing you how to do heelwork and stuff, which is why I've agreed to go back a couple more times so I can get my technique right. I'll just ignore any crap she comes out with. Plus I'm taking my mum next time- if she makes me out to be stupid or something mum'll sort her out! She's the only trainer in my area as well. Bummer... She is a KC breeder but I don't suppose that means much.
She also believes that being a rescue- and very exciteable- Lurcher who wasn't socialised properly, my dog will never learn to play properly with other dogs and it is too 'dangerous' (?!) to let off the lead EVER or even meet other dogs, unless the owner knows how to 'park' their dog too. They can sniff noses and that's it- for the whole of her life! Personally, I think that's rediculous and slightly cruel. She hasn't a nasty bone in her body- she's just a bit rough at times. What is the point of letting a dog off the lead if it is so 'well trained' that it won't go anywhere!
I've spent the last month trying to teach her recall which she is surprisingly starting to pick up, and she gets SO much out of being allowed to run and potter about off lead. I only let her off with a friend's dogs or somewhere remote at present- not on a busy path with lots of other dogs who may not like her attention. I really like it when other people come up with their dogs and they can sniff each other and play. However according to the trainer people that come up to you wanting their dog to meet yours are 'stupid.' And she said as though they were the scum of the earth- complete idiots!
I've asked people if it's okay for Gypsy to meet their dogs and I get really dismayed if we can't be sociable. How is someone stupid for wanting their dogs to socialise? I'm sick of reading snotty letters in magazines from all these people calling people like me irresponsible! I thought they said getting a dog means you meet lots of other people but no, we're supposed to cross the road the second we see another dog owner.
My dog sometimes decides to get silly, or growl at another dog, so I walk on, and I can always tell the dogs she won't like because they're the ones that stare at her as they approach, which I imagine is a threatening thing.
Anyway, I'll stop yacking, and cheers for your support. I've met a lot of strange 'dog people' since getting Gypsy which has upset me quite badly at times, but now I know there are still some sane ones out there! Thanks!

I've read this before. I think, from memory, Ed Frawley, from the Leerburg kennels, believes a similar thing, though for slightly different reasons than just "stupid".

You should read my blog here. I've been where you are and lived to tell the tale. If I and my rescued GSD can, anyone can!

You have to grow a bit of a thick skin towards all those people who tut and mumble because your dog can't walk on water. (Which of course theirs can.)

Re: onions My PRT only had a small bit of cooked onions that she snatched off the floor near a hot dog stand once the next day she threw up and collapsed , needed an injection and all she brought up was fried onion so not sure if it is large amounts or maybe mine has a alergic reaction. as a result i would never intentionally give any of mine onion or garlic to avoid that reaction as it was very scary at the time.

Please keep socialising your dog, your trainer may be good at training but not at knowing whats best for the dog, As for food I think what you are doing is excellent, you've checked & researched & worked out what is best for your dog. Keep doing as you're doing & just use the advice from the trainer that is useful to you.

Sounds like you have a very sensible approach to your dog and will fit in well with Dogsey

As for your trainer, personally I still think you should change. So, she can get you to do heelwork and stuff - any decent trainer should be able to do this WITHOUT all the rest of the rubbish she seems to sprout. Why not have a look round and see if there are any others in your area?

I personally would change trainers. I think that it is her business, day in and day out, she should know what she is talking about and she doesn't know by the sounds of it.

Some of the best (and expensive) foods on the market are a version of what you are providing already for your dog so why would it not be great for him.

Sorry but i would look elsewhere for a new trainer.

Do keep trying to socialise your dog . I have never had any problem with people asking first, I understand completely and I wish I could oblige.

You are obviously far more knowlegable about what to feed your dog than what your trainer is! I feed Burns for convenience but many evenings I like to give my dog what you are feeding yours. I like the fact that Mr Burns, as you say, does give information on his website about what is a good homecooked diet.

It concerns me that your trainer feels that people who allow their dogs to meet are stupid Granted some dogs will be aggressive / nervous etc and a responsible owner should warn you of this and not just allow the dogs to race up to each other. Many dogs are extremely happy to play together, that is natural and good for the dogs and does not make the owners stupid.

Being as Gypsy is a rescue dog (good on you ) it sounds like you need a more understanding trainer than one who frankly doesn't really sound like she's talking about.
