How long does it take for the scrotum to shrink after castration?

A friend of ours has had their dog castrated and was told that the scrotum sack that remains will eventually shrink.
If you've had your dog castrated, how long did it take for the scrotum sack to shrink or has it not shrunk much.
Thanks

Yes they do shrink eventually.

The last male I had neutered was 8 years ago so my memory is a little foggy, but I think it takes a couple of months.

Billy was neutered about a year ago and it's almost completely shrunken back now. I would say it was quite a few months before it wasn't really dangly! Mind you, his wotsits were always on the, ahem, large side. I guess the less it needs to shrink the quicker it will be.

I can't remember exactly how long it took but definitely a few months... in the end he looked almost like a girl from the back ( if you can ignore the dangly bit, lol )... and he was a very big dog..

Jimmi was done just before we brought him home, and it was about a year before the loose skin finally disappeared completely.

I would say 6-12 months on average.

Thanks

...just one more question...
when we had our dog castrated they took everything away and it looked a lot neater...does anyone know why they do this on some dogs and leave the skin to shrink on others...which way is better/safer etc or does it not matter.
Thanks for your input x

I had the Tibetan Mastiff castrated almost 3 years ago and they said the scrotum would shrink away in time. And indeed in most dogs I've seen it seems to do just that and they are left with a tiny nub of skin.

To be honest, I don't know how common this is, but my lad still has his poor, empty plumsack with minimal shrinkage. I think he's hoping that one Christmas, Santa will bring him a pair of neuticles. Honest to god, I could take it off and have a purse made out of it!

I would guess that the younger the dog, the more elastic the skin, and so the quicker/more easily it shrinks back?

Non of the vets I know remove the scrotal sac when the dog (or cat) is castrated, I have always assumed because it wasn't considered necessary due to the natural shrinkage.

Additionally it is a much smaller incision to just have enough gap to "pop"a testicle through ( like squeezing a spot) that to remove the whole sac so the surgical wound is smaller and only a single short incision.
