Dog friendly bbq

We went to a dog friendly bbq at a friends house and among the boxer 2 gsp 2 labs a springer a staffy cross ridgeback( i fell in love with this red girl)and a little shih-tzu who do you think was the vicious one who went for every dog or human that went near her... Yep the shih-tzu ..
To see all the none doggy people automatically go to her first and get re buffed was a eye opener ..
deed not breed as they say....Murf

What a lovely idea ~ a dog-friendly BBQ. I can just imagine the drooling from the smell of BBQ meat.

I suppose the little Shih-tzu has to compete with all the larger dogs for her share of food etc so being a feisty madam has probably worked for her ~ at least she gets noticed!

Deed not breed is certainly true but if you were small, fluffy and cute looking so every human you met invaded your personal space without so much as a by-your-leave, and all the big dogs bowled you over and stepped on you but it was ok because 'they were only playing' then I suspect you might snap first and ask questions later.

I do not deny that some small dogs are spoiled and allowed to get away with murder but equally I do wish that once in a while people would lie down on the floor and realise just what a little dogs perspective is!

I obviously wasn't there and don't know the dog in question but that sounds like a potentially stressful situation. I do hope the Shih-tzu was allowed to retreat to somewhere it felt less threatened.

Her owners arms and the kitchen .. she still snapped from there .. She was definitely spoiled .. in a t shirt and diamond look collar ...
I suppose having a small cute dog myself who acts in the complete opposite way I noticed it more ...

Im with you Murf, our toy breed have never been a problem with people approaching them from above, behind ect! There use to people, and know snapping, snarling ect is not allowed...There is no excuses for dogs snapping, big or small, should be treated the same imo..
alot of people seem to use the excuses of them being small and thats why the dog gets away with it, gets picked up and carries on doing it from owners arm, as the owner has taken it out that situation so the dog automatically thinks there is something to worry about, or is being rewarded!.. and dog shouldnt be stressed or feel threatend around other dogs or people, and taking the dog out that situation does it no favours....if it was as you say stessed in that situation, then the owners are stupied for taking said dog in the first place.
drives me mad - but rant off

ohh and how i hate to say this, but i have meet 5 shih tzu, all have been people or/and dog aggressive.

I agree with you!!! Small dogs should be as well trained and socialised as big dogs and that is what I aim for. But I have to say my youngest has started getting yippy with big dogs because so many we come across have no manners and knock him flying! Fortunately he's very food orientated so already he is learning that big dog = treat from Mum so we are making good progress.

But the OP was about how the big dogs behaved better than the little dog. That does not make them somehow better dogs they are just fortunate to have better owners!

On this forum we always defend dogs on the basis that it's usually the numpties who own them that cause the problems and this obviously holds true in this case also. Yet at the moment there seem to have been a little spate of posts criticising the behaviour of small dogs.

If I can take liberties with one of the most over used phrases on this forum... Deed NOT size, it doesn't have quite the same ring to it but please tell me you see what I'm getting at!

OK, now my rant is over....

J.

I was not aiming a snipe at small dogs at all.
It was more a go at people who ignored the other dogs who were nothing but friendly and well socialized and went for the cute little shih ..Murf

We had a big family bbq on Sunday and the dogs included:

2 beardies
2 JRT's
1 lab
1 terrier x

they were in their element with all the meat cooking, anyone would think we'd never fed any of them the way they were making their way around everyone
