Not Drinking!!!

I just need a little bit of advice.

As you may know Saffy was spayed and had two teeth out yesterday.

She has recovered pretty well, the only concern I have is she is not drinking.

She will drink out of your hands but not out of her own bowl. We have tried one of our own bowls but no luck.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks for your help

Maybe the cold water is aggrevating her gums, and your hands are warming the water a bit. Try her with slightly warmer water in her bowl, hope this helps

Hi Aileen poor Saffy, I wonder if her mouth is sore? Maybe try a little honey in the water to tempt her..

The day after Star got spayed she was not keen on drinking. I made up some boiled water and added some sugar and fed it to her in a medicine syringe. She did eventually start drinking again from her own bowl later in the day. I think she was just a bit dehydrated.

Thanks all

Graeme wondered if holding the water is making it slightly salty from the sweat in our hands.

We will certainly try warming and sweetening the water.

and definitly try the syringe too...Keena wouldn't have drank at all for the first 12 hours after being spayed if I hadn't gave it to her in a syringe. Keep the syringe on the side of her mouth opposite to where she had those teeth out though just incase it bothers her.

Hope everything is OK now but in case she's still a bit reluctant to drink I'd just agree with everyone above - do what you have to do to get liquid into her - excite it with honey, give it from your hands, use a syringe, spoon whatever.

Edited to say - it doesn't have to be gallons - just enough for you to know she has taken in a small amount and it will help her mouth be more comfortable

I think it's fairly usual and I tend to think it's the after effects of having the tube in their throat for the anaesthetic. Remember, we're all pretty used to having sore throats and work through it - dogs aren't.

My Rosie didn't drink for 36 hours after being spayed, I was worried but my vet said she had lots of fluids during the op so was ok.

She did start drinking later the next day, hopefully Saffy will too!

Thanks everyone for your replies

You have certainly managed to help put my mind at rest.

She is still not really drinking a lot but I will keep an eye on her and hopefully she will get back into her normal routine soon.

Thanks again
