'Sensitive' Dog Treats

Does anyone have any recipies for home made treats or biscuits without wheat or maize? Something similar to liver/sardine cake would be ideal.

Thank you, Carole 'n' Eddie.

Hi Carol, I make liver cake using rice or potato flour.

There are many different recipes, but this is what I do;

Chop a pack of liver.
Put it in a food processor with 6 eggs and 6 cloves of garlic.
Blitz

Pour into a bowl and add rice or potato flour until you have a thick batter.

Pour into a baking tray.

Bake on a lowish heat, I do Gas mark 4 for about an hour.

Leave to cool in the oven.

Chop into treat sized pieces and bag loads of it for the freezer.

The dogs love it!

Thank you - I didn't expect a result so quickly!

Where did you find rice and potato flour - is it a supermarket line, or a health food one?

Look in the gluten free section of the supermarket, it's normally there

I used to make liver cake using oats rather than flour, simply because that was the recipe I was given. Produces a cake similar to flapjacks I'm sure the recipe is on here somewhere.

There you go

1 pound of liver liquidised
1 pound of porridge oats
3 eggs
teaspoon of garlic I use the stuff in jars ready chopped
about 1/2 a cup of cold water to get the right consistency

I line a baking tray with foil, oil the foil and lift out of the tray while warm the foil just peels off the back. I cook for about 30 mins on gas 5

This makes a large baking tray full about 1/2 inch thick

Hey CaroleC,

You can often find rice and potato flour in what we term the 'foreign dreck' section of the supermarket (my favourite section). It's basically the catch all for 'we don't know how to classify this, so here you go'. If not check if you have a Chinese or Asian grocery nearby. They'll give you a hand!

If your dog is OK with beans, you may be able to use gram flour, made of chickpeas (garbanzo beans). These are pretty inoffensive beans, so you might give it a try. Mine love them, straight from cooked or canned, one at a time, as treats, so you might try just a little bit.

Thank you all - that's several things to try. I'll scale down the quantities, and I may try the sardine variation too (as I only have a tiny blender).

Prompt service ladies!!!

Carole 'n' Ed.

Hello Carole what about baked liver,
I simmer slices of liver in water/cut into small pieces/spread on a baking tray and bake until firm and dry.

Yes, thank you - we do that for shows, and they do last for ages. However, they are a bit rich for his obedience lessons, when he can get through a full tub! He also has gets cheese and boiled ham pieces.
