"Beard" care?

Bit of advice on "beard" care, no not mine I'm more well groomed!
"Dulcie" jack/parsons/small noisey hairy creature, is a rough coated type and has an extremely profuse rough coat. Meaning she also has a profuse beard, and I'm curious as to the best way to keep it in good condition and looking tidy and terriery as opposed a long raggerty mess!
I know all about beard proofing etc (didn't work on Flo though, we live and learn technique!), am more asking about the grooming/trimming side. As not sure how best to tackle keeping it looking right.

I would try thinning scissors on it. Will trim it and thin it a little without leaving a "trimmed" look.

My Bichon x and my sister's Westie get scissors, My 1 terrier mix gets thinning shears, and Oliver (the other terrier mix) gets the long hairs pulled out once in a blue moon.
