Postive training acheivements thread

Ok, as pointed out, the top ten threads in this section are dominated by punitive training methods or CM, so let's counteract this!

Please share your best achievement in dog training, achieved using only postive reenforcement. Please share the method used and the outcome. Let's show how powerful positive can be

We used positive techniques to get recall. We built up gradually from in the house to on lead outside to tennis court and eventually loose. We use treats and keep changing direction to keep him focused on us. We don't hang around while he sniffs for long, we keep walking and he keeps up. He likes to be near by. If he takes a while sniffing before coming, he doesn't get punished, we just move on and keep going. He is about 90% reliable using this method. He's come away from 99% of other dogs and stimuli, but we haven't set him up to fail yet so he's not been off-lead around squirrels yet. We're working on it.

I'll start off with my fav. achievement, which is a fab chase recall I am damned proud of

Taught to my BSD from puppyhood, using a predictive reward which was her kong on a rope. My favourite moment was when she ran off after some deer and she was in full flight. I called out our cue and she turned and raced back to me like a swallow in flight - honestly it was beautiful to see

She's chase recalled perfectly on all occasions, even away from other dog groups who have been chasing, but that was the best ever. A true "I wish I'd had a video camera" moment

my greatest achievement, though not with my own dogs, (not being big headed at all, but have had them from pups, so none have had any "issues" and everything they know has been taught using positive reinforcement)
is an ongoing process, i have two clients who own car chasers, both are BC's. they are both a work in progress but by god they are like different dogs! hand on heart you could NOT walk them on a road, for fear of them escaping their collar/harness/headcollar and now, one is *almost* perfect on lead (looong way to go before off lead near them) and the other is now able to WALK without glazing over, which is another huge achievement, funnily enough she isnt too bad off lead with cars in the distance!
both trained with positive methods, the first has now been introduced to the clix dog stop, screechy sound, when he looks like he's about to give chase.
im about to do a big write up for him on my website, whcih will outline the methods used and how i got the results, am sooo chuffed for them, the owners (one in tears almost lol) never thought they would get to the stage they are now..... makes every MINUTE of training worth while.
also, so far, the first dog i spent about 4 maybe 5 hours working with him and the second only 3.
Of course this by no means guarantees anything and the dogs may always have the problem, i like to think of them as recovering drug addicts lol. but it does mean the owners can ENJOY taking their dogs out and not have to think "oh my god, did i just hear a car??!!"

sorry for dribbling on about it, but am soo happy for them both

Great thread!

I think my biggest success with Rocky is recall - which Shadowboxer taught me.

I reinforced the behaviour with treats, and always set him up to pass. So would call him when he's coming to me anyway (and not call him when I know there was no hope in hell in getting him to come).

The key was not the treats I used all the time, but the occasional BIG treat - but as a surprise, so he wouldn't know when it would be a normal treat or a BIGBIGBIG treat that's what kept him keen.

I later introduced whistling - and that works too.

My biggest achievement and biggest problem during the first six months was Zena's jumping up at hubby when he arrived home, and we tried every trick in the book to no avail. Poor hubby was scratched to beggery all down his back from doing the turning around, all down his face, it was a complete and utter nightmare coz of course, she was soooo pleased to see him.

After exhausting every avenue learned from on here or in books, and at training classes (oh she'd never do it there would she ), I suddenly thought of how she loved to have her ball in her mouth and thought about the calming effect this might have on her, so, one night on his arrival, I immediately shoved the slipper into her mouth and for ONCE she never left the ground, instead, she just goes wriggling around him making all the silly noises and singing that only a gsd knows how - sorted! From that day on we've never looked back, the outside windowsill is full of slippers and even visitors get asked to bring one in on their arrival and she's never jumped up at anybody. If she ever drops the slipper, she then tries to jump up, so it's immediately put back in her mouth, and all very gently too!

Fab idea!
When Casper came to me, he was reactive with other dogs in a pretty severe way - I wasn't really aware of it so the first time we came across another dog on a walk, I was nearly pulled off my feet by his lunging and barking!
But knowing he was good with Kiki when he first met her, I braved a GSD group walk and he proved to be fine off-lead, so I knew I was dealing with lead reactivity. I did my research and I found a "grumpy dog" workshop locally that looked like it dealt with exactly this kind of issue. The workshop was all positive based and showed me how to deal with Casper's reactivity as well as teaching me lots about realising his limit/threshold, allowing him to calm down after days he'd reacted, etc.
Living a bit rurally I don't really come across loads of dogs to have done all the following at a distance etc. as recommended but I did start taking Casper along to more group walks to make meeting dogs a good, fun experience.
Casper's not "cured" completely but he certainly doesn't fear dogs like he used to. About a month or so ago I managed to actually walk him down a road with a dog that wasn't Kiki - something I've never done before, and the other weekend we met up with Amanda's Cain with Casper on-lead, right outside my house - which was a big test as not only was he on a short lead but he was also on "his" land. He was a little excited but not lunging, barking or throwing a tantrum, we carried on with the walk and within a few minutes he was calm enough to put on a longline and practically ignoring Cain.
All this and not a single set of training discs, stones in bottles, choke chains or shock collars in sight - all positive associations and making the effort of taking him places where I know he'll have positive socialisation with other dogs. I've finally been brave enough to contact a local doggy trainer with the idea of him joining training classes, something I wouldn't have braved a year ago!
