Sol ~ Stunning Big Boy – 5yo Blue Greyhound

SOL

**UPDATED: MAY 2013**

Location: Kennels in Suffolk, UK. Sol would love a foster home while he waits for his forever family.
Key Points: Big softie, loving, sweet, affectionate, great with other sighthound types, not safe with small dogs, walks well, good traveller.

This magnificent boy is Sol. He is a 5 year old ex-racing greyhound who is now looking for a home to call his after running over 30 races in Ireland. Sol is a big BIG blue boy and is absolutely stunning. He is in good condition though is shedding at the moment, and we can't wait to see his shiny new coat come through. This fella is a guaranteed head-turner and is going to bring his lucky new owners a lot of attention when out and about.

~ Personality ~
Generally: Loving, friendly, social, happy-go-lucky, content in himself.
Like a lot of the bigger boys, Sol is a total sweetheart. He loooooves people and lives for a bit of fuss and a cuddle. And with a boy this big you sure do get a decent cuddle! Sol has only just arrived to us, but it hasn’t taken him long to get to know everyone. He is very content with what’s given to him and is always a happy goofy dog sporting a great big smile. He’s a fantastic dog and we can't wait to see him stretched out on someone’s sofa.

~ In the Home ~
Generally: Not yet experienced a home.
Sol has not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him time to learn the house rules. It generally takes greyhounds 10-14 days to start to settle in a home, and really all they need is time and patience. Sol doesn’t ask for much and is going to be so happy when he finally gets a home of his own.

~ Other Animals ~
Generally: Great with other sighthound types, not currently safe with small dogs.
Sol is very good with other greyhounds, sighthounds and lurcher mixes. He is a lovely social boy who is always happy to have a ‘hello sniff’.

As with many hounds that come to us from the racing world, Sol is currently not small dog safe. This is simply because he has never seen them before and so assumes that, being so small, they are something to chase. The majority of hounds overcome this issue once they get regular contact and safe socialisation with other breeds of dog, especially the small terrier and toy breeds, but it is an area that will need continued work with his new adopters. We have a behaviourist on hand to help with this problem if needed. Because Sol is so big, he is potentially a strong boy, so we would like to see him homed with someone who has some experience with greyhounds and knows what is meant by them not being small dog safe at this moment. This is absolutely an area that can be greatly improved on and eventually overcome with the right kind of positive socialisation and repetition.

~ Out and About ~
Generally: Walks to heel, good traveller, will pull if sees another dog/cat.
Like most greyhounds, Sol is a total couch potato and does not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe secure area once or twice a week. Sol walks very well on the lead, though can pull if he sees a small dog in the distance. Being so big, he is stronger than he thinks he is and so walking with a halti is beneficial. Sol travels well in the car and likes looking out the window.

~ Greyhounds as Pets ~
In general greyhounds are very calm, mannerly dogs that are used to being handled. They can fit into a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly.

~ Where Am I? ~
Sol is currently in kennels in Suffolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him.

~ Want To Adopt Me? ~
Sol is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This dear boy would benefit so very much from a chance to live in a foster home and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always eager for new foster volunteers. It is an extremely rewarding experience and costs are covered by us.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering Sol, you can contact me (Tam) via email: tam@kerrygreyhounds.co.uk, or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs.

There are application forms for both adopting and fostering Sol, and we will ask you to fill the relevant one in as the first step in the adoption/fostering process. To speed up this process, we recommend you do this before emailing/calling. You can find the forms, as well as further information on our homing & fostering procedures, on either the Adoption Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/adoption.html or Fostering Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/Fostering.html .

Thank you.

~~ KERRY GREYHOUNDS UK ~~

Kerry Greyhounds UK is a voluntary organisation based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spread over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).

We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK. If interested in one of our hounds, please feel free to contact us via the following:
