Non bio, bio, colourfast, non colourfast

Hi Guys & Gals

Being foreign to the terminologies used on the washing machine and laundry powders used in the Britain, I have shrunk almost every item of clothing I own over a long period of time and made black clothing look grey and white clothing look grey. My OH doesn't know what the terminology means either being foreign too.

But I've had enough trying to guess it (I've tried reading the box, P&G's website etc no joy) and hope that someone could explain the difference beween Bio and Non Bio powders - in NZ they have one type of powder between all the different brands so there's no getting it wrong.

And could someone please explain what Colourfast and Non Colourfast means - I keep trying to be literal fast colour, it runs?? Is this right

Sorry for being such a ditz, appreciate your help.

Biological washing powders contain enzymes that act on the stains, some people are allergic to these so non biological powder are available to them (my niece for one). There are Bios for white and bios for colourds.

Colourfast means the dye should be 'fast' and shouldn't 'run'.
Non colourfast means it may run.

The best option is to divide your washing up into 'white' and 'coloured' and to use a biological powder for whites and a 'coloured' washing powder (containing no bleach and whitening agents) for colours, then make sure you wash at the correct temperature

Hi Ingrid - well I'm certainly no expert when it comes to washing but as I understand it.....

Colour fast - the colour shouldn't run
Non colour fast - the colour will run

Biological - has enzimes in that help break up the dirt - best used on whites or really mucky stuff BUT not if you have sensitive skin as this sometimes causes allergic reactions / rash etc.

Non biological - has no enzimes to help with cleaning - kinder on the skin (and clothes) but IMO not as effective as bio

Hope this helps a little
