Gretchen - 3.5yo Fawn Greyhound

GRETCHEN

**UPDATED: MAY 2012**

The lovely Gretchen is an ex-racing greyhound girl who will be approaching 4 years old in July. She is a lovely fawn lady with kind eyes, and is a happy, healthy dog.

~ Personality ~
Gretchen is a quiet, shy girl who takes a bit of time to come out of herself. Once she knows you, she’s beautifully sweet and affectionate, but she won’t crowd in and demand attention amongst a pack of dogs. She has oodles of love to give to anyone who takes the time to bond with her. Gretchen has just moved over to us from Ireland, so she is a bit quieter now that she has been moved from her Irish foster home. In a few weeks we are sure that she will come out of herself a bit more, and show us that beautiful little personality waiting within.

~ In the Home ~
Gretchen has been living in a foster home in Ireland for the past several weeks before coming here. She was sharing that foster home with 10 other dogs including a small Jack Russell, and posed no problems whatsoever. She was amiable with her foster siblings and content to share her space. Gretchen was also quiet through the night and is really a no-fuss kind of girl, very content with simple things such as a soft bed and a bowl of food. Unfortunately due to lack of foster spaces, Gretchen is currently back in kennels, but we hope to get her out and into a loving foster home as soon as a space comes up.

~ Other Animals ~
Gretchen is very well behaved with other dogs regardless of shape or size. She may not be the most playful of the bunch, but if given more time we think she will start to show some interest in toys. She has not been tested with cats yet, but this can be carried out if needed.

~ Out and About ~
Gretchen walks well on the lead and never pulls. A child could easily walk her. Like most greyhounds, Gretchen will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week.

~ Greyhounds as Pets ~
In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. Greyhounds also don’t shed as much as other more popular dog breeds and this can make them suitable to live with allergy sufferers.

~ Where Am I? ~
Gretchen is currently being kennelled in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to us in Norfolk to meet her.

~ Want To Adopt Me? ~
Gretchen is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This girl would greatly benefit from being in a foster home, and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always in desperate need of new fosterers. It is such a rewarding experience, and costs are covered by the rescue.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering Gretchen, please visit either our website’s Adoption Page or Fostering Page for information and instructions on our homing & fostering procedures. If you have any further questions or problems, please feel free to email me (Tam). Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs. Thanks!

~~ KERRY GREYHOUNDS UK ~~

Kerry Greyhounds UK is a small voluntary organisation that is based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spaced over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).
We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK.

If interested in one of our hounds, please visit our website’s Adoption Page for information and instructions on our homing procedures. Once you have filled in and returned the application form, we will then contact you via phone or email to discuss adopting one of our hounds in more detail.

If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.
Emails are usually replied to within 24hrs.

Thank you.

**UPDATED: 5th JULY 2012**

The lovely Gretchen is an ex-racing greyhound girl who has just turned 4 years old. She is a pretty fawn lady with kind eyes and a healthy coat

~ Personality ~
Gretchen is a very shy little girl who needs a patient, loving home. She takes a bit of time to come out of herself and does not currently have much trust for people, especially strangers. Once she knows you, she’s beautifully sweet and gentle, but she is clearly not used to so much human contact and is unsure of how to approach people.

Gretchen has very recently moved into a foster home, and this complete upheaval from everything she knows has stressed her. She had never been in a home before, so is understandably needing time to adjust to the huge change and to get used to being surrounded by new people. Right now she is shy and uncertain, preferring to stand off to the side and observe the situation. We hope to see her come out of her shell over the next few weeks as she gets used to her foster parents. Gretchen has oodles of love to give to anyone who takes the time to bond with her, and she desperately needs someone to love and trust.

~ In the Home ~
Gretchen has found the transition from kennel to home very stressful, and needs some time and a patience to come out of herself. Every single thing is new to her, and it is sadly now apparent that she has not received much human attention or contact in her previous 4 years. Right now if approached she will try to run away, and if that option is not available she will simply freeze and stand until you are done handling her. She is in no way aggressive, but does not yet enjoy the interactions either. She is not currently responsive to words or gestures and does not trust people.

This little girl’s lifeline right now is the other greyhound she is sharing her foster home with. Gretchen follows her foster sister around and watches how she interacts with people. She is learning what to do and where to go within the home, taking all her cues from her greyhound friend. As such, Gretchen will need to go to a home with at least one other confident, adjusted dog present to show her the ropes and help support her.

Though having only been in her foster home for 10 days, Gretchen is already house trained and clean through the night. She is very quiet and tries so hard to be a ‘good dog’; it’s just that right now she doesn’t understand what people want from her. With lots of time and patience, this girl is sure to be a gem. When she realises what you want her to do, she will do her level best to achieve it. It will just take a bit of time to break through her barriers and earn her trust.

~ Other Animals ~
Gretchen is very well behaved with other dogs regardless of shape or size. She may not be the most playful of the bunch, but if given more time we think she will start to show some interest in toys. As already mentioned, it is vital that Gretchen go to a home with another dog or two already present to help her transition into your home. She is a lovely, amiable girl who is dog savvy and content to share her space and belongings. She has not been tested with cats yet, but this can be carried out if needed.

~ Out and About ~
Gretchen walks very well on the lead when she’s not frightened. If something spooks her, she will stop and freeze, and needs to be gently coaxed out of herself. If approached by people on the street, she will choose her option B: freeze and stand until the person is finished with her. She sadly does not currently get much joy out of these interactions, but that happiness will come once her fear disappears. Like most greyhounds, Gretchen will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week.

If you think you can offer this girl the love, patience and security that she desperately needs, please do contact us. Gretchen is a special little lady who will be so incredibly rewarding and loyal if given a bit of love, guidance, and a space on your sofa.

**UPDATED: 17TH OCTOBER 2012**

The lovely Gretchen is a 4 year old ex-racing greyhound girl. She is a pretty fawn lady with kind eyes and a healthy coat. She is 25” to the shoulder. Gretchen has been in her foster home for 3 months now and is making gradual progress.

~ Personality ~
Gretchen is a very shy little girl who needs a patient, loving home. She takes a bit of time to come out of herself and is distrustful of strangers. Once she knows you, she’s beautifully sweet and gentle, she just needs a bit of time to convince herself that you won’t hurt her.

Gretchen has been gradually getting to know and trust her foster parents, and her beautiful little personality has started to show itself. She is very sweet natured, quiet and just wants to be a good little girl. She loves getting gentle affection, and has started to respond to training without fear. Gretchen really does have oodles of love to give to anyone who takes the time to bond with her, and she desperately needs someone to love and trust.

~ In the Home ~
Now, 3 months in, Gretchen has settled wonderfully into her foster home and becoming house savvy. She is completely housetrained, not destructive, doesn’t counter surf and she is also fine to be left completely alone once she has set up a safe area. She settles very well when left like this, and really is a no bother kind of girl. Gretchen is the kind of dog that likes to please and be told she’s doing the right thing. When she realises what you want her to do, she will do her level best to achieve it. It will just take a bit of time to break through her barriers and earn her trust. With some time and patience, this girl is sure to be a gem.

~ Other Animals ~
Gretchen really loves and leans on other dogs to show her that things aren’t as scary as she thinks. She trusts other dogs much quicker than people and so learns a lot from being around other steady, confident dogs. She is currently sharing her foster home with another greyhound girl, and follows her foster sister around, watching how she deals with situations. She is a lovely, amiable girl who is dog savvy and content to share her space and belongings.

As such we feel that Gretchen might be happier in a home with another dog already present to help her settle. She is dog savvy and comfortable with dogs of all shapes and sizes, though very boisterous dogs wouldn’t be a good match for her. She may not be the most playful of the bunch, but if given more time we think she will start to show some interest in toys. She would be a lovely quiet friend for an older, lonely dog who wants a companion when left.

~ Out and About ~
Gretchen walks very well on the lead when she’s not frightened. If something spooks her, she will stop and freeze, and needs to be gently coaxed out of herself. This is getting gradually better as she gets familiar with her walk routes, but it will be a while yet before this girlie is officially comfortable when out in the real world, and her new owner will need to continue this patient work. We have a behaviourist on hand who can help new owners with this issue.

Like most greyhounds, Gretchen will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day. She can not yet be let offlead as she is too fearful and may bolt, but its still early days yet for this lady. She is a bit cautious but friendly in meeting unfamiliar dogs when out and about.

If you think you can offer this girl the love, patience and security that she desperately needs, please do contact us. Gretchen is a special little lady who will be so incredibly rewarding and loyal if given a bit of love, guidance, and a space on your sofa.
