How much excerise should you give a 'large' breed pup?

Many people have mentioned that it's a good idea not to excerise a 'large breed' pup too much. Just wondered if anyone could be more specific and give actual guides!

Would also be handy to know what you guys do with your dogs - perhaps u could reply with:

Breed
Age
Sex
Amount of excerise (in 'time' or length)
(and height & weight if known)

Cheers!

I know you have to be more careful with large breeds, maybe Chloe could help here?

I have however been told, by someone who has been 'in' dogs for many years, is that daily excercise should be 5 minutes for every month of age; i.e 2 months = 10 minutes, 3 months = 15 minutes etc.

Arrr, I think it's until they've stopped growing, so you can't damage their joints etc.

Sorry Azz, but I've never owned Large Breed,

]Morning Azz, Liberty is correct!!! i have large breeds and i never over do it they never go up and down steps until i know they can with out running//falling down them, they do get lead work in the garden sits down wait stand and how to watch me and my hands as i do like my dogs to watch for hand signals, i never let my pups go mad with each other until a bit older, mind you saying that i find my English Bulldog pups the worst they are always on the go, to watch them run is so funny and they would go on for ages if i let them, all mine get lead work and are allowed 5/10 mins playing with each other with me watching, then they go and rest. i go and sit in the town with 10/12 week old pups i go and find a seat and the pup sits on my lap or the seat and just watches the world go by and every one comes to say hello which is great for the pup.At a young age a good pace walk on the lead is much better than a gallop with other pups/

I know that sonny can't start his agility class until he is a year old. he is 6 months weight is aprox20kg breed-boxer and he gets at the weekend a run around the park for about 20 mins but through the week he gets a few half hour walks. Is that too much? I really don't know enough about this all I know that with Sonny he loves being out and about and its hard to keep him amused without his walks.

Love sam and sonny

Thanks Corsogirl - that's brill advice.

At the Mo I take Rocky out for a short walk late at night to get him used to the cars - I had to stop for a few days because he banged his leg and was limping! He was around 4months old when we picked him up and he lived on a farm so had never really seen a car. I've been driving him to my mums and sisters where there are lots of kids (nieces and nephews) and so am socilising him that way, now his runny poo is getting better I shall take him to the park to meet lots of other dogs. Also there is a local school here and may do that too - only thing is I don't want to chuck him in head first without building his confidence up first - what do you think? Any help appreciated!

Are there any socialisation classes in your area cause they are great. Sonny went to puppy class but it has taken us a while to get him into a good obedience class (all too busy) and I have noticed a difference in his behaviour in the break between the pup class and his new class cause it has been a few weeks. But the socialisation classes really help - my other prob with sonny is he has no fear of cars - in fact everytime he sees a silver car (cause my OH drives one) he tries to chase it

So will need to sort that out.

Love sam and sonny

Yeah there are puppy classes and we went to the first one - but I pulled him out as we'd only had him two weeks at that time (he was quite nervous of the car etc) plus by the third week, he pretty much knew sit, stay, and walk on a leash (which is what they covered). So i figured it better to take him to the adult classes once he's older, as by then he'll have settled in at home too. And in the meantime I could socilise him in a less in-your-face enviroment (some of the puppies there were a little mad! lol).
