So please post what your breed needs to be tested for.

Can folks add whether their breed should be tested annually or if there is a permanent DNA test for the whole of the animals life.

Weimaraners should be hip scored and Miniature Dachshunds PRA eye tested, there are other things you could test for but these are the ones that are asked to be done by the KC (for the accredited breeder scheme) and breed clubs.

Dobermanns.
Von Willebrands Disease. (Once, lifetime result by DNA or parentage)
PHPV - Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, an eye disease that causes blindness.
Dilated Cardiomyopathy. Heart disease and the biggest killer of Dobermanns, yearly testing by ECG is recommended, as onset can be sudden and previously undetected.
Hypothyroidism. Tested for annually.
Hip Dysplasia. X-rayed at 12mths or above, a combined score below 16 is favourable for breeding.
Wobblers Syndrome, Cervical Spondylopathy. You can X-ray the dogs neck and score the vertibrae according to alignment and compression, done once. However, this condition can be bought on by accident or trauma, so x-raying is not currently a top priority.

English Springer Spaniels diseases known to exist:

Generalised Progressive Retinal Atrophy (GPRA) (annually)

Central Progressive Retinal Atrophy (CPRA) (annually)

Multifocal Retinal Dysplasia (MRD) (identifiable from 6 weeks of age. Pups should be tested for this before leaving for their new homes)

Primary Glaucoma (annually)

Entropion (identifiable at 6 weeks of age)

Fucosidosis (once in a lifetime DNA test)

Hip Dysplasia (once in a lifetime, breed average score 13)

Diseases under investigation:

Hepatitis: During the last three or four years, data has been gathered from affected dogs for use in a research project aimed at investigating the disease, determining its causes, and ultimately carrying out studies to discover whether there is a genetic link that predisposes some dogs to this disease. From this the Chronic Hepatitis Research Project has been given the go ahead and is due to be completed over a three year period.

Phosphofructokinase (PFK) Deficiency: An autosomal recessive genetic disease that inhibits a spaniel’s ability to convert sugar into energy. Spaniels affected by PFK will often exhibit signs of exercise intolerance. Additionally, PFK destroys the red blood cells that deliver oxygen and remove waste throughout the spaniel’s body. This destruction of red blood cells causes the dog to become mildly or moderately anemic and also shows signs of exercise intolerance. A simple blood test by your veterinarian is all that is required to test for PFK. Results from a PFK test will yield one of three possible outcomes: normal/clear, affected, or a carrier.
