Unbelievable how many of our dogs do this. Just through a chance post, we've found out!

It is definately not snoring because the dog wakes up/is awake and the choking noise continues, it reminds me of the noise my mums cat makes when getting rid of a fur ball

Your not dense I even had to ask what on earth was going on, hence this thread

How often does it happen in your dogs?

Just wondering because I have never heard it before and not since

Cavaliers are very prone to "snorting"fits as they tend to have elongated soft palates which are the cause of the "snorting"

When a dog is relaxed(including being a sleep or dozing)the soft palate can be irritated hence the"snorting"

It is really known as Reverse Sneezing

Cassie seems to have a bout of this every couple of weeks or so but less as she gets older. Thanks for the link, it was really helpful

Ozzy has done it about 8 times in his 3.5yrs that's all - when he first did it I was trying to see what was in his throat as it literally sounded like choking. It only happens very spasmodically and funnily enough he hasn't done it in ages

He can be asleep one minute then stretching his neck out and making this choking noise the next, but he is never alarmed by it and just goes back to sleep when it stops!
